These traditional Dutch stroopwafels (wafer cookies sandwiched with caramel) are made in Billings, Montana. You read that right – Billings, Montana. You won’t enjoy a better stroopwafel, and this includes the Netherlands. We were fortunate to discover them when they were being handed out on a benefit bike ride through the Big Hole Valley outside of Dillon, MT. They fit neatly in your cycling jersey and were hands down better than the brand  we were carrying at DeLaurenti. We ordered a couple cases, placed them next to their Dutch counterparts in our cookie aisle and let our customers decide. The verdict came in, and they have been DeLaurenti’s official stroopwafel ever since!

These cookies have a long tradition in the Netherlands that dates back to 1810. They were also the favorite treat of a young man named Jan Boogman, who grew up in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Jan also grew up running track, and as luck would have it, all that running led to Jan meeting a girl from Montana. Though Judy grew up a world away on a ranch outside of Roundup, Montana, a shared love of running and good food led to some of the best stroopwafels in the world being made in Billings, Montana.

Jan and Judy began making the cookies in 1981 on an antique hand-iron at local festivals and fairs throughout Montana. What started as a summer gig in a small booth evolved into a storefront and a growing national reputation.

Their delicious, handmade Caramel Cookie Waffles are made with the finest fresh ingredients and are baked on flame-fired irons before being filled with homemade caramel. Enjoy them right out of the package, or place them on the lip of your hot cup of coffee or tea and allow the caramel center to warm before enjoying!
